The U.S. Homeland Security will relay terror alerts via Facebook and Twitter per recent reports from top secret government documents. The "new" plan for terror warnings will not only be posted to Facebook and Twitter but includes changes from the color coded terror level system to a two level warning system. The new warnings will be issued as "elevated" or "imminent" and will alert the public "when appropriate" following approval by various Homeland Security officials, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement.
The new terror warning system will be in affect as of April 27, 2011. Details of the new plan are included in 19 page report labeled for "official use only" issued by the Department of Homeland Security. The plan details the alert system and the protocol for alerting the public of potential terrorist activities. The plan identifies Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano as the lead official of the National Terrorism Advisory System.
The new terror warning system is expected to be easy to understand and highly specific. An "elevated" alert would indicate the potential for a "credible" threat against the United States while an "imminent" alert would indicate a specific or impending terrorist threat.
